New England Web 2.0 firms grabbed over $467M in 2005 and through the first quarter of 2006 according to PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association’s Venture Capitalist Web 2.0 List posted recently on SiliconBeat (ok..not that recent). I’ve created another version putting the New England firms on one tab that you can download here. There are several key takeaways from this list.
1. The defenition of Web 2.0 still seems to be a debate?
I’m not sure what they were thinking when they put the list together but at least keep the list to technology companies. For example, the list included funding for Vermont Teddy Bear company (I removed it from the NE list). Please let me know if VTB plans on a social networking site for teddy bear owners. Actually not that bad of an idea?
2. Tied for Top of the NE Tech Firms – Turbine & Netezza Corporation ($30M Each):
Keeping with the theme of “is this really Web 2.0?”…Netezza provides data warehousing services. Turbine, on the other hand, not only fits within the Web 2.0 space but goes beyond it with one of the next frontiers online about to explode – MMORG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games). The space is alreay huge but it’s potential has not even been tapped yet. This company is postioned to ride the wave up over the next few years.
Brigthcove is not that far behind with almost $20 Million in funding during the time period.
3. NE is Still a Bit Light on the Web 2.0 Front.
At least according to the funding numbers listed. New England firms only took in about 12% if the available funding through the first quater of this year with the lion share of money going to the West Coast including 7 of the top 10 companies which were from the Silicon Valley.
4. Regardless of What You Use this for – It’s Great Stuff: For numbers junkies like myself, I’ll use this resource over and over again. Keep an eye on SiliconBeat for an update to the list.

Would the Vermont Teddy Bear social site make it Teddy 2.0?
