The Boston web 2.0 week started strong with another successful Webinno on Monday night and went strong all the way through LocoModa’s funding announcement on Friday.  I have a feeling that this week will start strong as well.

2 Beta Launch Announcements

Boston-based web analytics company Compete announced that the Compete Search Analytics service has come out of beta and launched to the general public.   The ”pay-as-you-go” service is an good compliment to their existing Site Analytics service and is worth checking out. 

Also opening to the public this week is Zync, the Cambridge-based event recommendation service that uses a patented technology to suggest what to do this weekend based on reviews from people just like you.   If you like to win things, they currently have an iPod promotion for registered users going on right now.

Over 210M in Funding, IPO Filings and Investment Announced

Alright, $103.5M of the headline was from the Pogo ( Chicopee, MA ) IPO filing announcement, which is not quite web 2.0 but an “on-demand” private jet service is pretty darn cool stuff. Along with Bedford’s Linearair, it’s good to see that the area is taking part in how VLJ’s are going to transform that industry into “Flying 2.0″. 

Here are the list of other key Boston-area stories:

• Mike Volpe emailed over the announcement that SMB marketing service Hubspot announced $5M in funding led by General Catalyst ( More on StartupSquad )
• Constant Contact (Waltham, MA) captured quite a bit of coverage with their IPO update announcement and the hope to raise $70M+.  I covered their $15M VC round last year…maybe they will use the extra cash to update their appearance now?
• Somerville’s LocaModa, a developer of location-based text-messaging services, raised $6.18 million in Series A funding
• Sermo , a social network for physicians, announced it has raised $26.7 million of venture capital led by Legg Mason Capital Management
• ScanScout, the Cambridge-based video advertising technology, announced an undisclosed amount of funding from Time Warner

Will EONS Take an Early Retirement?

That would have been the headline if I wrote an article on the baby-boomer social network news of the week.  The site that was setup to bring together the active 50+ set  announced that it was restructuring their organization and laying off 24 of it’s staff in effort to focus on what works and trim what does not.  Another 12 of the staff left voluntarily for opportunities outside of the company as well.  

Bravo!  I love it when start-ups realize they can not be everything to everyone.  With over 65M boomers online right now, there is a market for helping seniors connect (newsflash…dating!).  Eons appears to have built a respectable level of traffic and this move to refocus will hopefully put them back on track.

No intricate details were released on what the funding would be used for but The Boston Globe reports that the company said it plans “to use net proceeds from the IPO for general corporate purposes”.

Goldman, Sachs & Co. will act as the sole book-running manager of the proposed offering. Piper Jaffray & Co. will act as co-lead manager, and Thomas Weisel Partners LLC and William Blair & Company will act as co-managers.
