If you are looking to build the next social media empire, here is a simple set of rules from one of the founders of the modern web era back when it was called "Web 2.0" and not Social Media. Kevin Rose, founder of Digg.com, provides simple rules to help get you on your way at this years FOWA London event.

Digg.com is one of the king sites from the Web 2.0 revolution that seems to have taken a back seat in the blogosphere recently. It seems strange to say that but seriously, what do you spend your time on now? Increasing your community on Twitter or Facebook? Or do you obsess about getting a story from or about your site on the homepage of Digg.com? I bet instead that you have not thought about Digg lately as you obsessively chase for Twitter followers or burn the midnight oil looking for ways to make the most popular Facebook page for your insurance business. Digg seems so…2006. Am I right?

In any case, you should pay attention anytime that you see Digg founder Kevin Rose speak about what it takes to make a popular site. Here is the video and accompanying slides for his “1 to 1 Million Users” presentation on that topic from the excellent FOWA London show this year. It is a very simple but worthwhile presentation for anyone looking to build the next big social media empire.

Here is a quick paraphrase of the elements that Kevin discusses in his presentation. I have also posted the the slides to the presentation below as well.

EGO – Does your feature increase your users self-worth or stroke their EGO?

SIMPLICITY – Stop overbuilding, make it simple for your users

BUILD & RELEASE – Stop thinking you understand your users, see what they actually do

HACK THE PRESS – Simple tips and tricks like “Invite Only” for bloggers, go for the most junior blogger on a big publication

CONNECT WITH YOUR COMMUNITY

ADVISORS – Leverage advisors particularly in areas where you are not strong.

LEVERAGE YOUR USERBASR TO SPREAD THE WORD

DOES YOUR PRODUCT PROVIDE VALUE FOR 3rd PARTY SITES

ANALYZE YOUR SITE TRAFFIC

INTEGRATE THE ENTIRE PICTURE (The steps above)

If you have not had a chance yet, I highly recommend checking out the many presentations from this years FOWA London event. It is a fast-track MBA degree on succeeding in the web industry.

So, have you thought about Digg lately?

I know at some point someone in my company is going to send around this video and wonder at all of the wonderful game changing facts and figures – remember, statistics are like management crack. I just wonder if this type of video should have some sort of creative direction attribution? Should the author reference the Shift Happens videos or other compilations that have used this same style?

You could also ask the same question about attributing a source for the claims in the video as well? Curious? Just visit the Socialnomics.com blog where you can pick up his book of the same name. The video was produced by Erik Qualman who is Global VP of Online Marketing for EF Education and based right here in Cambridge, MA.

Enjoy!

I used to have 3 very simple "strategies" in the past. 1.) I followed you if you had anything to do with a Boston tech startup 2.) your twitters were funny 3.) you followed me But recently, I have had to start modifying this concept to the following.

I Know You (In Real-Life That is)
Pretty straight-forward concept – if you fit the bill and I am not following you, send me a tweet.

You Have a 2-Way Conversation (You Reply & Retweet)
I may not always respond quickly but if you tweet my back, I’ll tweet yours. Even though I used to like twittering into the twibys for therapeutic reasons, it’s much more interesting to have conversations.

You Know What You Are Talking About
I have interests just like the rest of you and I spend a lot of time researching. If you publish consistent links and content on a topic that I am following…I’m yours.

You’re Funny!!!!!!
This was my old #2 but it really should be #1. Other than using Twitter for tech research, my only other interest in twitter was to send a receive 1-liners. Are you funny? Tweet me.

You’re Connected to a Boston-Area Startup
Related to #3….I still keep an eye on anything and everything startup in the New England area. Hell, I may even start posting again. If you are working at, founding, funding or advising a startup, tweet me.

Keep in mind, these are just guidelines. I may follow you with no particular reason in mind.

What is your Twitter Follow Policy?

In case you were wondering…Follow Me on Twitter!

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -

Where have I been? It’s this crazy bird blogging thing that keeps me going and seems so much more captivating. It seems so much easier, and lot more fun at times, to drop one liners on my army of unsuspecting and unwilling tweeps than it is to explore the details of the latest Boston Web 2.0 startup.

Ah yes, I am afraid I have become one of those blogs that goes blank for awhile and drops out of date. My post on Webinno 18 was so stunning and hard hitting that I needed to keep it up for 4 months straight!

Exciting.

After all; When you Tweet, The world Tweets back. When you blog…maybe not so much.

The real story is actually quite simple. I’ve got a job.

However, I do miss testing local startups and getting their stories out. I also have a long list of 93profiles to get posted on the site (sorry to those who I have missed so far). I just might get this party started again soon. I would also be open to getting a few other local bloggers to join in on the party. Any takers?

In the meantime, follow me on Twitter.
