Finetune Launches Social Music Application for Facebook

Over the past year since it’s launch, the finetune service has amassed over 1.2 million listeners and almost 2 million songs to their social music service. Now the Newton-based start-up is hoping to extend their reach by launching a Facebook version of their “social soundtrack” service allowing users to access the site through their Facebook profiles.
If you are not familiar with the finetune service, is it most similar in concept to sites like Pandora where users can listen to free music tracks that are streamed based upon their similarity to artists that the user enters on the site. However, through the finetune service, the music selections are served up courtesy of a proprietary recommendation engine that utilizes the wisdom of other users listening habits. Finetune users have generated over 300,000 custom playlists and listened to over 100 million hours worth of free music on the site since launch. In addition to the recommended music tracks, users can create their own personal playlists that can be shared and discussed with their friends.
I already have finetune in my music listening rotation while at work along with Pandora and LastFM. The Facebook version of the finetune application is very well done and should be a good addition for Facebook users. The real challenge will be marketing the service in this highly competitive space.
