Start-Up on 93South

Web Innovators Group 18It was another great night at 18th Web Innovators Group. I have not heard of an actual count but it was easily the largest turnout yet.

My favorite demo from the main 3 presenters had to be Totspot but Zeer and WebNotes both look like promising startups. Of the side demonstrations, it was great to see former colleague Michal Hlavac from local virtual world CreaturePark and to meet Robert DeFranco from 211me. I also had a chance to meet upcoming blogger Amanda Gravel of SocialHoneycomb – add her RSS feed to your reader.

Pictures: You can check out all of the pictures on Flickr. If you have pictures of the event, please add them to the Boston Tech Events group that I just started on Flickr.

Social Media: You can follow the event on (Summize) Twitter Search or join the new Webinno room on FriendFeed started by my colleague and FF star Hao.

Presenters: Please check out each of the local startups from the event last night.

The next event will be September 15th!

This weeks 93Startup profile, currently in Alpha, brings a crowdsourcing approach to sourcing vendors for your business.  We all know that finding a new service provider can be a risky and frustrating process.  VendorCity is looking to make that process easier through customer recommendations.

I met founder Craig Gillespie at the recent PopSignal event in Boston and look forward to using the service for my next sourcing project.  VendorCity will start a public beta in the Boston and New Hampshire markets soon.

What is your elevator pitch?
At VendorCity, we have two core business beliefs that drive us forward every day:

· Vendors and service providers are critical partners in running a successful business

· The best way of finding highly recommended and trusted vendors is through word-of-mouth referrals

Working with the wrong vendor can be very costly but finding the right one is like finding a needle in a haystack.  Thus, we built VendorCity, a proprietary recommendation engine that leverages the power of social and professional networking to provide businesses with 24-7 access to word-of-mouth referrals.

Who is your target market?
Our target market is the small and medium-sized business sector.  Until now, most small businesses have not had compelling reasons to participate in the online social and professional networking sites because there was little to no direct value to their bottom line.  However, every company needs good outside vendors as they are critical partners in running a successful business. Now, with VendorCity, the B2B marketplace has a crowdsourcing tool that allows them to find the best vendors and, from a “good karma” perspective, allows them to reward good vendors with great recommendations.

What makes you different or stand out?
VendorCity is unique in that it turns the online vendor search process completely around.  A standard Google or Yahoo search returns a long list of far too many companies all of which appear provide the same service. Our approach eliminates the needle in the haystack problem, because our engine is stocked with the most highly recommended vendors within each industry. Unlike traditional online models, where top placement in search results is influenced by technical trickery or, more often, bought outright with marketing dollars, the only way a vendor can rise to the top in our engine is by positive recommendations from their clients.

The VendorCity recommendation engine:

· Provides immediate access to the short list of peer-reviewed and top-ranked vendors in a city

· Rewards the best vendors with more business opportunities and allows them to rise to the top

Our community of users enable the best vendors to be highlighted and to ensure that bad vendors cannot simply buy their way to new business.

Who are the founders?
· JC Cameron, President & Co-Founder, is a serial entrepreneur with 20+ years of software development experience and has built a number of successful businesses including WebEvent, a venture-funded scheduling company whose software is still being used and sold nearly 15 years after it was first launched.

· Craig Gillespie, CFO & Co-Founder, is a senior financial executive with more than 15 years experience in financial roles in technology companies including overseeing all financial aspects of a $25M+ software company.

· Tom Harms, Director of Technology & Co-Founder, is a well-rounded technology and software developer with a specialty in higher mathematics who has been building world-class software solutions for almost a decade.

What is your startup story? (Where did the idea come from, inspiration, funny anecdote, etc., etc.)
As startup veterans, we are always looking for good ideas to build a successful new business.  The idea behind the company was initiated by a conversation that Craig, our CFO, had with a colleague of ours.  They were discussing how difficult and time consuming it was for startups to find vendors and how they were constantly being asked by people if they could recommend a company that did X, Y, or Z.   As we discussed the concept, it was clear the problem wasn’t limited to startups in high-growth mode and that just about every small and medium-sized business needs a way to find good vendors. Many times, companies continue to use bad or mediocre vendors simply because it is too much effort to find better ones.  Thus, VendorCity was born to solve this universal business challenge.

Our next local 93Startup profile, TotSpot is a very well designed application (it’s a Ruby app!) that strives to make it easy to spread the news of juniors latest achievement through the web. Although I have not had the chance to dive deeply into TotSpot yet, I plan a review soon.

The service is currently in private beta but Adam from TotSpot has arranged for special set of invites for 93south readers. If you are interested, please click here to sign up.

.

What’s your elevator pitch?
TotSpot is a place for parents to publish a page about their kids and share with family and friends. It’s part online babybook, parent journal, and social network.

Who is your target market?
TotSpot is designed for parents of children aged 0-10. Initially, our focus was on parents with kids 0-4, but (in our private beta) we noticed that a lot of parents were using TotSpot as something they did “for” their young kids (0-4) and “with” their older kids (4-10)

What makes you different or stand out?
TotSpot is uniquely designed around the needs and wants of parents. On TotSpot parents can create lifestage-oriented content such as Firsts (milestones), Growth Charts, and more. All content on TotSpot is time-tagged (we want to know when things actually happened) so that everything can be organized into an elegant and compelling narrative. Furthermore, everything on TotSpot is structured to ensure easy data portability, both online and off – we will enable parents to easily take their TotSpot pages and turn them into personalized parent journals or DVDs.

Who are the founders / key people?

  • Michael Broukhim (co-Founder) – Michael is the former Editorial Chair of the Harvard Crimson. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in June of 2007. Mike manages product development.
  • Adam Katz (co-Founder) – Adam graduated from Harvard in June of 2007 – my focus is on the business development side.
  • Fred Oliveira (CTO) – Fred was an early editor at TechCrunch and is a noted Web 2.0 guru, he co-manages the product development with Michael

What is your startup story?
Both Michael and I come from large but close-knit families. Coincidentally, our youngest cousins are both named Max (his was 3 months when we started, mine 2 years old) and we both noticed how much “stuff” (photos, videos, notes) their parents sent out and we noticed how poor the existing tools were, so we decided to try and make something that was better and that enabled parents to share their children’s story in much a simpler and more compelling way.

What’s your elevator pitch?
We sell premium web templates and html products made by industry leading web designers using a community based marketplace approach.

Who is your target market?
Our market is still a bit of a moving target. But, we are geared towards businesses who are savvy enough to get their feet wet when it comes to web design and want to leverage an existing design for their new site. Our products are also great for bloggers, or others looking to get a site up quick and easy.

What makes you different or stand out?
We focus only on high quality products. We offer great support to our customers. Our community model ensures fresh and relevant products.

Who are the founders / key people?
When it comes to inspiration and support, there have been lots of key people involved in getting this project off the ground. But officially speaking, there is just Ben Harper, a local web designer who wanted to try his hand as an entrepreneur

What is your startup story?
This startup was born out of the frustrations of trying to run a service business and constantly having to reinvent the wheel.  After months of talking and researching, it was time to try a product based business with a defined deliverable and a clear vision. I was also highly inspired by my genius friend, Osi Peters, an Engineer currently working at Vista Print.
