The Perfect Startup Pitch & The Importance of Orientation
Earlier this week I had the pleasure of attending the Harvard Business School Association of Boston New Venture Pitch Night. The HBSAB New Venture Program (NVP) is the first step for startup teams in New England region wanting to compete in the global HBS New Venture Competition (NVC), a $25,000 competition for early-stage startups with at least one HBS Alumni.
The event provided hopeful startup teams with an opportunity to practice their elevator pitch in front of a group with an opening talk by Michael Skok, general partner from North Bridge Venture Partners. I thought it would be great to share an earlier version of his presentation on how to give the perfect pitch.
If I could highlight one piece of feedback from Michael’s presentation for the teams it would be the concept of orientation. It is important to establish as early as possible the who, what & why of your offer so that your audience has the proper frame of context to evaluate it. Michael provides the example “We do xx for yy by uniquely zz” to give you a starting point.
Here are all of the companies that pitched that night with as many links that I could find. My favorites from the evening were fitness startup Fitzeal, retail technology Springboard Retail and 3D printing startup Mebotics. I would add medical venture Sano LLC and veterinary startup allyDVM Inc. to my favorites list if I had more background in either field.
